Give both halves enough time

A safari and beach holiday can combine active wildlife days with a gentler finish. The balance depends on what you want from the trip. Someone coming mainly for wildlife may want more safari nights; another traveller may prefer a short safari and a longer coastal stay.

Begin with your total time in Kenya and allow for arrival, departure and internal travel. Avoid counting a transfer day as a full day of relaxation or wildlife viewing.

Choose your coastal atmosphere

The coast offers different kinds of stay. Diani, Watamu, Mombasa and Lamu are worth considering for different reasons, from beach time to heritage and a slower island rhythm.

Think about how much you want to do beyond your accommodation. Access to towns, excursions and the feel of the surrounding area can matter as much as the room itself. Share whether quiet time, activities or cultural exploration is your priority.

Connect the journey sensibly

Tsavo can form part of a route towards the coast, while other itineraries may work better with a domestic flight. The best option depends on the safari destinations, flight schedule and where you will stay by the ocean.

Ask for the full transfer plan, including the airstrip or airport, baggage allowance and onward journey. A convenient-looking connection still needs time for check-in and possible changes to the schedule.

Respect the changing sea

Coastal winds, tides and local conditions affect swimming, boat trips and marine activities. Discuss the season and the specific place you plan to stay rather than assuming the coast behaves the same throughout the year.

Treat wildlife encounters at sea as possibilities. Use appropriately authorised operators and follow their safety and wildlife guidance. If a boat excursion is an important part of the trip, ask how weather changes are handled.

Keep the last days simple

An unhurried coastal finish works best when the final transfer and international flight have enough margin. Check whether the last night should be close to your departure point. Avoid adding one more excursion if it makes the return journey stressful.
